Options for Small Structures

The small frames are available either:

1. with nailers -
Our favourite method of closing in small frames is to use nailers, small members that support the sheathing and outside siding. This is a common traditional method seen on old barns throughout Nova Scotia. This is particularly advantageous for non insulated buildings.

2. without nailers -
We also offer these same frames without nailers, for people who want to try their own ideas for closing them in . This does give a little more freedom in terms of picking different window sizes, door positions, etc.

IF you want the nailers, you have more choices to make before placing your order!

Will the building be insulated?

If the building is to be insulated...
we frame it differently. We feel that it is better and more cost effective to insulate outside the frame. There is no thermal bridging and no "dew point" issue.

What kind of siding will you use?
a. horizontal siding (clapboard) - requires vertical nailers

b. vertical siding, or board & batten - requires horizontal nailers

If the building will not be insulated...
the rafters run past the walls to make overhangs for the soffit and facia. We still need to know whether to provide vertical or horizontal nailers.
