About R-Values

For years, insulation companies have given "nominal" R-values for their products that are much exaggerated when used in the real world.

For example, fiberglass batts with a stated R-value of R20, installed in a wall with steel studs, actually perform at R 7.1.

The Building Codes are in the process of being changed. Manufacturers' stated R-values will not be recognized, unless backed up by tests.

The "Effective R-value" given for TBC Canada's products is an actual performance rate, resulting from tests done in real life conditions. 

Insulation for concrete basement walls

Another great product is the Quik-Therm concrete insulation wall system.

This goes inside the basement, has its own studs, and is practically self-leveling. It is installed in half the time of a built-up stud wall, and is ready for drywall. 

Here is the technical data sheet on the Quik-Therm Concrete Insulation System. Note that the R value of  R17.5 given is not "nominal", but R Performance value, determined by real life tests.
